A Must For Shoulder Assessment

articleVideo

In my opinion, the standing shoulder flexion test is the most valuable functional test for shoulder assessment.  I talk about this test a lot because it is also such a valuable screen to determine whether people are ready for overhead movement or whether movement is optimal.  I work with a lot of CrossFit athletes as well as individuals who have adopted CrossFit as their training regimen.  They get into quite a bit of overhead work, and shoulder dysfunction or painful syndromes are not uncommon.

The standing shoulder flexion test is helpful in targeting which areas you may need to focus on based on what you see.  Within an assessment, this test will help you determine whether you need to look at muscle length, muscle performance, or both, to optimize overhead capacity.  It is one of the many tests and screens we look at in the Movement Optimization Course, the results of which we then link into the intervention strategy to get at each aspect of overhead movement, whether structural or functional.

There are a number of elements to look at within the standing shoulder flexion test: head position, thoracic spine extension, scapular movement and anterior core stability.  In this video, we take you through what you need to look at and how it helps you with the balance of your assessment.  Watch the full video now!
